Malicious calls advice.

Malicious calls are made normally by people that want to cause you or your family distress and anxiety. The caller may threaten you, your family or your property. They can be of an abusive nature with particularly vile language. Sometimes they are just silent.

If calls are making direct threats to you or your family contact the police and they will advise you on how to proceed.

If the calls are silent they are generally not intended to be personal. Silent calls tend to be generated by predictive dialler systems that are used by call centres. You can reduce the amount that you receive by registering with Silent Callgard. www.silentguard.co.uk

General advice.

  • Stay calm and state that you will be informing the police and that they should stop calling you.
  • You could also state to the caller that the line is being traced and that the police will be able to tell who they are.
  • If they do keep calling then try leaving the phone to on side for 3 – 4 minutes when you have received one of these calls. The caller will eventually get bored of not getting a response from you and give up.
  • When you answer the phone do not speak genuine callers will speak first.

Things you should do.

Make note of the following:

  • Time and date of the call.
  • Callers number (1471) if available.
  • Nature of call.
  • Gender of the caller.
  • Did the caller have and accent.
  • Wording used within the call.
  • Length of the call.

This is important information that the police will need if it is a personal malicious call. If it is calls coming from a company then Ofcom can also use this to carry out their own investigation.
